4L coming out of the level plug does sound like a lot though. Normal drain is around 5.5L, even if the mechanic mistaken the dry capacity of 7.5L for refill, the box should only have 2L too many. Engine oil starts off light brown but quickly becomes black (especially in diesels), Whichever is leaking it will be a gearbox out job. Then either gearbox repair or new crank seal.
